La Ciénaga

2001

Lucrecia Martel

Argentina, Spain, France · Drama · 103 min

The rainy season is just beginning in north-western Argentina: two middle-class families crowd into a decaying estate and a few murky pools, waiting for rain, waiting for children, waiting as nothing happens. Lucrecia Martel's feature debut, premiered in competition at Berlin and later taken into the Criterion Collection — a film in which almost nothing happens and everything is dangerous.

La Ciénaga still

01Why this film today

The second reason is internal to the archive: the three great lands of Latin America are complete tonight — Brazil, Mexico, Argentina. If City of God (2002, Brazil) is one pole and Los Olividos (1950, Mexico) the other, La Ciénaga stands closest to today: the children of the favela fight to live, while the middle class of the estate quietly mould.

Another reason is weather. October here is autumn in the northern hemisphere, but La Ciénaga never leaves February in the southern one — the wettest, most breathless days of the year. Seen together, the two films make an unusual pair: 88 cold hard minutes, then 103 sweltering ones.

It is also a film about waiting: for the rain to stop, for the children to come back, for a family change no one will admit first. Anyone raised on three-act structure should see how a director turns nothing happening into an event.

03About the film

04Why it is a classic

A debut that went straight into competition

On 8 February 2001, La Ciénaga premiered in competition at the 51st Berlin International Film Festival. It was Lucrecia Martel's feature debut; before it she had made only shorts. The film opened in Argentina on 12 April that year and was later taken into the Criterion Collection — rare treatment for a first feature.

A story with no events

The film has no central incident. An injury, a festival, an affair, quarrels — all happen at the same speed; nothing is picked out as plot. The danger comes not from events but from how skilled these people are at looking away from one another. That is what makes the film irreplaceable.

Sound as image

Flies, rain, barking dogs, the television, a tap left running. Martel's sound design is not atmosphere but narrative: key information arrives first as sound, then is confirmed or denied by the image. Watch it as two films — one seen, one heard.

A director who judges no one

There is no easily blamed villain in the entire film. Martel places her camera in doorways and at the far end of corridors, letting people quarrel in the depth of the frame while the rooms rot by themselves. It is class observation: what rots is not one family but a whole class's leisure.

The road after

After this pool, Martel made The Headless Woman (2008) and Zama (2017), becoming one of contemporary Argentina's essential authors. All of it began with one afternoon on this estate.

05What to notice

06Before you watch

07In one line

The pool says nothing, and you spend the whole film waiting for it to speak. La Ciénaga turns a family's holiday into a room with no exit.
