Anatomy of a Fall

The Start of Winter is days away, the season when light is scarcest and shadow longest. Ninety-four years apart, both films in this issue ask the same question: can images restore the truth? Anatomy of a Fall puts a recording, an autopsy report and a marriage into a courtroom and leaves each juror to reconstruct a night nobody witnessed. Man with a Movie Camera inverts the question, laying the camera, the editing table and the strips of film in plain view and declaring that "reality" was cut together all along. One film prosecutes the image for the truth; the other exposes how the image manufactures it — screened side by side, they form a complete reading of why we trust what we see.

What keeps it under discussion is not whodunit but the way it inverts the courtroom genre: most legal dramas ask whether the accused is guilty, while this one asks whether a marriage can ever be reconstructed from evidence.
