1850s New Zealand. Ada, who has not spoken since childhood, arrives with her daughter and her piano to marry a settler she has never met. When her husband trades the instrument to a neighbour, a slow bargain over keys, lessons and the body begins. Campion's Palme d'Or winner turns silence into the loudest thing on screen.

01Why this film today

Frost's Descent has passed and the Start of Winter is still ahead: the lowest light of the year, the greyest sea. That is this film's palette. Before it arrived, the archive held exactly one title from Oceania and none from New Zealand, and only three films directed by women. This is the gap being filled today.

03About the film

04Why it is a classic

In 1993 Jane Campion shared the Palme d'Or with Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, becoming the first woman — and the first New Zealand filmmaker — to win it. The following year the film took eight Oscar nominations and three wins: Holly Hunter for Best Actress, eleven-year-old Anna Paquin for Best Supporting Actress, and Campion for Best Original Screenplay. What matters more is the design. Campion refuses to make Ada a mute woman awaiting rescue. Her silence is a sovereignty she actively exercises; the piano is not her comfort but her organ of speech, and when it is traded as property she loses not an instrument but the means of being heard. Michael Nyman's score speaks for her so insistently that it becomes a compensation — beautiful, and faintly coercive. Stuart Dryburgh photographs the West Coast of New Zealand as a compound of mud, rain and black sand, with figures often reduced to a small patch of the frame. This is not a landscape postcard; it is pressure of scale.

05What to notice

06Before you watch

07In one line

Silence here is not absence. It is a presence that refuses to yield.
