The Godfather
教父
1972
Francis Ford Coppola
USA · Crime / Drama · 175 min
In 1972 Coppola turned a bestselling mob novel into a family tragedy. Violence is never the spectacle here; it happens inside weddings, kitchens and churches — and the gangster film acquires, for the first time, the weight of classical tragedy.

01Why this film today
Because it is one of those films everyone assumes they already know — while far fewer people have actually sat through it from beginning to end. For half a century its images have been quoted, parodied and turned into memes, until the film itself has blurred behind them. What is worth watching today is not the famous scenes, but how Coppola used light, tempo and silence to turn one family's rise and fall into a fable about America.

03About the film
04Why it is a classic
Director and source
Mario Puzo's 1969 novel was already a bestseller. When Paramount bought the rights, the plan was a cheap gangster picture. One of Coppola's central conditions for taking the job was to tell the story as the history of a family rather than as a crime film. He and Puzo wrote the final screenplay together and won that year's Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Cinematography
The cinematographer Gordon Willis came to be known as "The Prince of Darkness" — a nickname earned here. He made a decision that was unusual at the time: he pushed the interiors down to near-black, letting the shadows carry the real information. The opening study scene is lit by little more than a single overhead lamp, and Paramount executives complained during screenings that "you can't see anything on television." Fifty years on, that underexposure has become the film's moral atmosphere — half of a face in light, half in darkness, with the other half never quite legible.
Editing and structure
Its most famous passage is the baptism intercut with five murders: the church cantata and the executions alternate, one sacred rite set against one settling of accounts. Both strands share a single piece of music and lock together beat for beat. This is not showing off — it states the film's whole thesis in one cut. Baptism and killing, completed inside the same minute.
Performance
Brando's Vito Corleone is a man who barely moves: he slurs, he is slow, and the weight of his power travels through silence. Pacino's Michael is the only figure in the film who is in motion. Those two modes of acting are the film's real counterpoint.
Screenplay and film language
The Godfather rarely explains itself. It does not tell you who is playing whom; it seats you at the table and lets you work it out. Enormous amounts of information sit inside gestures — a toast, a closing door, a light held out for someone. That confidence in not explaining is why it has been so hard to surpass.
Legacy
In 1990 it was among the first films selected for the National Film Registry. On the AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies it placed third in 1998 and rose to second in the 2007 tenth-anniversary edition. Critical consensus is that it changed the grammar of the gangster film: before it the genre was about crime; after it the genre was about family, inheritance and cost.
05What to notice
06Before you watch
(The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration)由 Robert A. Harris 主持修复,是目前公认最接近原片意图的版本。
07In one line
The Godfather is not really about how gangsters kill. It is about how a decent man becomes, step by step, the person he once refused to be.
