The reading
Post-war Vienna is divided into four occupation sectors, and a broke pulp novelist, Holly, arrives to join his old friend — only to catch his funeral, and then discover the friend is alive and selling diluted penicillin on the black market. Carol Reed and Graham Greene film this carved-up city as the apex of film noir: tilted frames, a zither, the speech on the Ferris wheel, the chase through the sewers, the woman's silhouette at the end of a corridor.
Harry Lime's "dots" speech is cinema's most famous villain confession because it states utilitarianism without any malice: from God's point of view, people are only dots. Its horror lies not in faulty logic but in perfect logic — it demands that the audience complete the refutation itself. And the person Holly waits for in the corridor leaves the film's real difficulty with everyone who considers themselves good: does knowing someone amount to answering for them?

Q1Why has Harry Lime's "dots" speech become cinema's most famous villain confession?
A reference answer
Because he states utilitarianism without any malice: from God's point of view, people are only dots. The horror is not faulty logic but perfect logic — it demands the audience complete the refutation itself. It is noir's most elegant takedown of grand narratives.
Q2The sewer chase is the film's most "genre" scene — why must it exist?
A reference answer
Because the first half is literature — dialogue, mystery, cafés — and this scene turns it into cinema: the city's underground becomes the basement of morality. The chase through Vienna's guts visualises who truly owns the city — and when the final door opens, light comes from below like a verdict.
Q3When does "friend" become the most dangerous exemption?
A reference answer
A hint: when friendship begins underwriting each other's wrongdoing. The difficulty of Holly's last shot is not legal: he finally admits that knowing someone is not the same as answering for them, but loving someone sometimes means you can no longer pretend not to see. This question has no cheap answer — only whether you have the nerve to fire.
