Mirror镜子2026-10-25

Memory is ordered by objects, not dates — water, fire, milk, mirrors: a life built without the man showing his face.

Lord, how true — we really don't know our mother's faces. A viewer's letter: a film called elitist was claimed by one plain sentence.

The reading

A man lies in bed, gravely ill. He is not telling a story; he is remembering: his mother waiting in a country house for a husband who will not return; the barn burning while the family stands watching; the evacuation from Moscow when the war comes; the divorce, the quarrel with his mother on the phone, her hanging up. None of it arrives in order; it is held together by water, fire, milk, mirrors, doors and curtains.

And the man remembering never once shows his face — only his voice. Tarkovsky's reason was structural: memory reveals how a person thinks, so collecting memories is enough to draw him. Mother and ex-wife are played by the same actress; the poems in the voiceover are read by the poet himself, the director's father. A film denounced as elitist and barely released at home was finally claimed by an ordinary woman's letter: we really don't know our mother's faces.

Questions to sit with

Answer them yourself first, then open the reference answer.

  1. Q1Why does the adult protagonist's face never appear? Does this absence contradict the film's autobiographical subject?

    A reference answer

It is not a contradiction; it is the most honest form of autobiography. Tarkovsky's reason was structural: memory reveals how a person thinks, so gathering memories is enough to draw him. Keeping the man off screen denies the viewer any exit — you are locked inside his consciousness, as inside a real memory.

  2. Q2The mother and the ex-wife are played by the same actress — what is that casting saying?

    A reference answer

It says that what he loved and what he fled may be the same thing. Alexei tells his ex-wife that when he remembers his mother he sees her face — line and casting confirm each other: two faces made into one is the film's most precise statement about home. What we seek and resent in a partner usually comes from an earlier relationship.

  3. Q3Is there an old object that brings a whole year back the moment you see it? What has it been keeping for you?

    A reference answer

A hint: an old object preserves not information but time itself — it proves that an afternoon really existed. That is what this film is made of. Your object is probably connected to someone you still owe a moment of real looking.
