Before the Rain暴雨将至2026-10-25

Three chapters loop into a circle to prove the circle is not round: the cycle breaks when someone refuses to pass it on.

Time never dies, the circle is not round — and the film's structure is the proof.

The reading

The first film made in North Macedonia after independence, and it won the Golden Lion on arrival. Three chapters — Words, Faces, Pictures — run end to end: an Albanian girl hidden in a monastery, a picture editor in London tired of her marriage, a Pulitzer-winning photographer returning to the homeland he left sixteen years ago. Three languages meet in the same loop, and the rain of the title never quite falls.

"Time never dies, the circle is not round" is the film's structural manifesto. A circular narrative carries a terrifying suggestion: violence passes down like a family debt, and every victim becomes an executioner. But the director leaves a gap in the circle — if in any segment someone refuses to pass it on, the circle breaks. That was Yugoslavia's question to the world in 1994, and it is the question of every endless revenge.

Questions to sit with

Answer them yourself first, then open the reference answer.

  1. Q1Why does the director scramble the order of the three chapters? What does the circular structure do that a linear one cannot?

    A reference answer

Because linear narrative carries a built-in consolation of cause and effect: it can tell you who started it and who ended it. The circular structure removes that consolation — it makes you feel there is no way out, and at the same time suggests the reverse: if there is no beginning, there is no fated ending. The shape of the story is the argument.

  2. Q2The rain of the title never falls — what does that withheld downpour correspond to in the film?

    A reference answer

A hint: it corresponds to the reckoning and reconciliation that should have fallen. The blood feud in the village and the chance meeting in the London restaurant are both waiting for a resolution that never arrives, while a new cycle has already begun. The rain that never falls is the film's position: an ending does not come on its own — someone has to do something.

  3. Q3Has life ever given you an "here we go again" moment — the same pattern recurring? How did you recognise it, and how did you stop it?

    A reference answer

A hint: the signal is that the lines sound familiar — you catch yourself repeating words from years ago, only with a different person. Stopping usually requires an act the cycle cannot account for: an apology, an exit, or simply no response. Everyone in the film who passes the hatred on has their reasons — which is exactly what makes it so hard to fight.
