The Seventh Seal第七封印2026-10-25

The knight asks, Death never answers, and the game goes on — faith as the act of asking into silence.

What cuts deepest is not Death but the silence — between a man who keeps asking and a world that never answers.

The reading

The knight Antonius Block returns from the Crusades and plays chess with Death on a plague-stricken shore. He plays not to win — no one wins against Death — but to buy time for one question: does God exist. The whole film unfolds in the gaps of that game: the flagellants' procession, the travelling actors, the last supper, the strawberries and milk.

Bergman's cunning is that he offers no answer and allows no shortcuts. The penitents substitute pain for an answer, the actors cover fear with performance, the love of Jöns and Mia belongs to a lucky few, and living for the moment belongs only to the lucid — every way of life works temporarily inside the silence, yet none can speak to the silence itself. So the game must go on: playing is the most honest form of faith this non-believer can offer.

Questions to sit with

Answer them yourself first, then open the reference answer.

  1. Q1The knight cannot beat Death at chess — why play at all?

    A reference answer

Because the game itself is the answer: what he buys is not time but the right to keep asking. Every question he asks in the film meets silence or deflection, yet as long as the game continues, the questioning has not been ruled void — the most honest consolation Bergman can offer a non-believer.

  2. Q2The film offers several ways to live — penance, performance, love, living for the moment. Why does none persuade the knight?

    A reference answer

Because they are all ways to go on living, while the knight asks why to live. Penance substitutes pain for an answer, performance covers fear, love belongs to a lucky few, and living for the moment belongs only to the lucid — each works temporarily inside the silence, yet none can address the silence itself. That is precisely why the film gives no answer.

  3. Q3Is there a question you have asked for years without an answer? What has it changed in you?

    A reference answer

A hint: a question without an answer usually changes not the answer but the asker — he learns to live with the question, the way the knight lives with the game. The line between being trapped by a question and travelling with it is this: the traveller still works, still cares about others, still tastes the strawberries and milk.
