Raging Bull愤怒的公牛2026-10-25

The ring is not an arena but a mirror — every punch Jake throws lands on the self he cannot forgive.

You make movies, you're in the ring each time. — Martin Scorsese

The reading

Raging Bull is about a man who breathes suspicion like oxygen. Jake LaMotta's career is a success story; the film is about his failures — the suspected wife, the beaten brother, the dressing room where he recites another man's lines. Scorsese films him neither as monster nor victim but as a man driven by an obsession that handed him the title and took everything else.

The cruellest detail: nothing is ever confirmed. His whole life rests on an accusation without evidence — and most of us have lived some smaller version of that, convicting someone in our hearts over a tone of voice, an unanswered message.

Questions to sit with

Answer them yourself first, then open the reference answer.

  1. Q1If nothing in the film is ever confirmed, why does Jake's suspicion still feel so true?

    A reference answer

Because the film swaps evidence for bodily experience: the camera stays on his face, and we watch and guess alongside him. Suspicion does not need evidence — it needs attention, and three hours of close coverage gives it enough to look like truth.

  2. Q2Is the violence Jake inflicts at home the same thing as the violence he absorbs in the ring?

    A reference answer

It is the same coin. In the ring, violence has rules, a referee and a payoff; at home he uses the same moves where no rules apply. The film makes both spaces equally loud — the fights are mixed painfully close, the family scenes are deafeningly quiet. Violence is not his profession; it is his language.

  3. Q3Have you ever held a certainty without evidence? What did it turn out to prove?

    A reference answer

Usually it proves nothing about the other person and everything about where our attention went. Jake's tragedy is not believing the wrong person; it is spending all his energy confirming the suspicion, until any ambiguous detail reads as guilt. Certainty without evidence works backwards: it picks the verdict first and the reasons after.
